Temasek Cares - Programme to Engage Parents of At-risk Students
Helping at-risk students to build familial bonds
Partner: Northlight School

Northlight School held many activities in the last year to help students build familial bonds, especially those who come from challenging home environments. This was made possible through a programme supported by Temasek Cares. The school organised tea sessions with parents to discuss their child’s academic progress and career options. The annual camp brought together parents and their children to share and to spend time together. Parents and students also took part in a cooking competition organised by the Geylang Serai Community Club.

The school is greatly encouraged by the participation of the parents and the positive feedback received. It is stepping up its programme to engage parents by appointing a dedicated Parents Coordinator. With the full-time coordinator, the school is able to organise more bonding activities as well as to assist the families with problems they face at home. This will free up the teachers to focus on the educational and developmental needs of the child.

The programme aims to build a more stable home environment for the students so that they are able to do better in school. Temasek Cares is supporting the extended programme to help 500 parents over 2 years.

Temasek Cares - Programme to Provide Continuing Support for Graduates
Helping NLS graduates to succeed
Partner: Northlight School

Northlight School actively supports its graduates to make the transition to a new academic or work environment. Last year, with the support of Temasek Cares, the school organised evening classes by the Workforce Development Agency and the N_Reach Portal. A homecoming event was held for alumni to re-connect with their friends and teachers. Other activities included motivational talks and group sessions where alumni discussed challenges they face.

Given the popularity of the programme, Northlight is extending its support for alumni by engaging a dedicated Alumni Affairs Coordinator. With the full-time coordinator, the school is able to organise more activities to reach out to the growing number of alumnus. The coordinator is also able to provide personal guidance to an alumnus who faces difficulties at home or at his or her new school/workplace.

The programme aims to help Northlight alumni to succeed in their lives and careers. Temasek Cares is supporting the extended programme to help 500 alumni over 2 years.

Temasek Cares - Programme to Support Students with Learning Needs
Helping NLS students with learning needs to cope with their curriculum
Partner: Northlight School

Northlight School launched a pilot programme last year to help students with learning needs to access the school’s curriculum. With the support of Temasek Cares, the school employed 2 literacy coaches to help students improve their reading proficiency. For those with higher learning needs, the school engaged speech therapists and occupational therapists to work on their language and motor skills. Teachers were trained by a specialist to manage students with learning needs and they were also better resourced with more intervention tools.

Given the encouraging results of the pilot programme, Temasek Cares is providing further funding to support the programme for another 2 years to benefit 180 students and train104 teachers.
