Temasek Cares – FRENZ
Helping youth in ITE to build resilience and character
Partner: 4PM (Persatuan Persuratan Pemuda Pemudi Melayu), Institute of Technical Education
FRENZ is a mentoring and school social work programme for Institute of Technical Education (ITE) students. The programme was initiated by 4PM (Persatuan Persuratan Pemuda Pemudi Melayu) to help youth build resilience, develop character and complete their post-secondary education.
The various ITE colleges nominate classes for participation in FRENZ. Trained counsellors from 4PM attend lessons with the youth in these classes. By coming alongside the students, the counsellors are better able to understand the challenges faced by these students and provide timely support.
Casework is provided for students with more complex needs requiring longer-term support. Through this whole-class approach, students are better able to relate and identify with the counsellors who are journeying with them.
Outside of the classroom, volunteer mentors from 4PM engage and bond with the students through activities such as outings, community outreach events, and charity work. Mentors and youth participate in meaningful events such as Ramadan-On-Wheels, which delivers meals to the less fortunate during the Ramadan period, as well as making regular visits to the elderly.
Youth benefit from the personal and positive interactions with the mentors, who are experienced professionals or community leaders. Where needed, the mentors help link students with their families and school counsellors.
Temasek Cares helps FRENZ to build new capability and capacity, including recruit more leaders, upgrade the skills of mentors, establish a befriending programme for the elderly, and organise an annual camp.
